Prof. Henning Kagermann, President of acatech, the German National Academy of Science and Engineering, will deliver a lecture to the Irish Academy of Engineering at 6 p.m. on Monday, 14th May 2012, in The William Jefferson Clinton Auditorium, University College Dublin.
The lecture entitled: “How the German National Academy of Science and Engineering contributes to Sustainable Growth through Research and Innovation” is open to the public and will:-
Give deep insights into the work of the German Academy including current projects such as:-
1. The “Innovation Dialogue” between the German Federal Government, business and science, initiated by Chancellor Angela Merkel
2. Germany’s “National Platform for Electromobility”, a network with members from all societal parties
3. The alignment of national ICT innovation ICT programs with EIT ICT Labs, the knowledge and innovation community of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)

This paper was prepared by a taskforce organised by the Irish Academy of Engineering. The paper highlights the importance of Engineering Research to the future success of the Irish economy. The paper recommends that the overriding criterion for the Government’s research funding should be the impact of the research on the economy, in the short to medium term. The paper also addresses the need for greater collaboration between universities, research institutes and institutes of technology, through the establishment of Engineering Research Platforms in selected topics of national importance. It emphasises the need for much closer involvement of industry with the School of Engineering.
