Ideas for Programme for Government
Programme for Government – Key Points
During the next ten years the country faces a range of major challenges that need to be addressed by integrated Government programs and related allocation of resources.
This report highlights a number of these issues and suggests practical measures to address these challenges.
CLIMATE CHANGE
In order to meet the agreed EU 2030 Targets a wide range of programs need to be implemented at estimated gross cost of approx. €50Bn.
HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION
Housing for 150,000 additional people in the greater Dublin area could be provided by re-zoning areas and building a related transportation infrastructure.
This model could equally apply to other urban areas e.g. Cork / Galway.
BALANCED REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Practical measures to develop the western economic corridor (Waterford to Galway) to provide a counterweight to growth of the Dublin Region are suggested.
ENTERPRISE, INNOVATION, EDUCATION
To ensure that the productive side of the modern economy continues to develop in Ireland initiatives are suggested in relation to Innovation, Research, Education.
The scale of investment required to address these, and other major challenges is likely to exceed available financial and other resources. This will require selective prioritisation identifying the most cost effective and essential measures to be undertaken.
