Tom Leahy was unanimously elected at the AGM to lead the Academy as its President commencing on 1st June 2021. Tom says “ It is both a challenge and an honour to take a leadership role in developing our Academy. The Academy relies on its active members and Patrons to produce expert reports on how to influence public policy. We have very vibrant standing committees, a well developed and active regional structure and have significantly expanded our international reach to sister Academies of Science and Engineering. In all of this our collective level of ambition is delivered with a very modest budget. We intend to build on this solid foundation in the years ahead and look to opportunities to expand the Academy” . As we emerge from the shadow of a global pandemic our Island economy faces both challenges and opportunities. Tom says “Science and Engineering will be central to taking advantage of these opportunities. I look forward with confidence to ensuring the Academy and its members provide active support and plays its part to rebuild our economy. My thanks in particular to our outgoing President Jim Browne and the Council for your service and look forward to your support”.
