The 2024 Euro-CASE conference had as its theme – European Engineering for sustainability – New Solutions for Environmental, Urban and Health Systems and was held in the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

Thankfully the conference was not impacted by the major regional flooding and was held in a balmy 23 degrees. The river Danube rose to 8.3 m. above its normal level, which was close to its historic high- water level, and shipping movements were prohibited for safety reasons.

The theme underscores the crucial role that engineers play in shaping a better world. In an era defined by environmental and social challenges, it is the engineering community that leads the charge in finding applicable solutions.

The Irish Academy was represented by President Seamus McKeague and past President & special advisor Tom Leahy. A direct link to Euro CASE is on our website www.iae.ie and the conference presentations will appear on the Euro CASE website in the coming weeks.

Three paramount topics central to Euro CASE global mission were covered in detail:

  1. Pressing issues of environmental challenges – Waste recycling, water management and industrial and nuclear decontamination.
  2. Sustainable health care management– In a dynamically evolving society, addressing health needs is crucial for long term sustainability.
  3. Monitoring and controlling urban transport and utility systems – Unprecedented challenges demand innovative solutions and real- world applications.

The Irish Academy of Engineering is a long- term and active member of Euro-CASE and is represented on the Board and the Finance committee.

The European Council of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering ( Euro CASE) is an independent non-profit organisation of national academies of Engineering, Applied Sciences and Technology from 23 European countries.

The mission of Euro-CASE is to pursue, encourage and maintain excellence in the fields of engineering, applied sciences and technology, and promote their science, art and practice for the benefit of the citizens of Europe.

It was founded in 1992 upon French initiative by the members of CADAS (Conseil pour les Applications de l’Académie des Sciences). The Executive Committee meets four times a year. The Board meets once a year. Euro-CASE acts as a permanent forum for exchange and consultation between European Institutions, Industry and Research.
Through its member academies, Euro-CASE has access to top expertise (around 6,000 experts) and provides impartial, independent and balanced advice on technological issues with a clear European dimension to European Institutions, national Governments, companies and organisations.
