The University of Galway hosted the first meeting of the IAE west region on the 27th September 2024 in the Anderson Boardroom in the main quadrangle building of the University.

The meeting was facilitated through the University President’s office, Professor Peter McHugh, who attended the  meeting.

Professor Padraic O’Donoghue FIAE, who is the new Chair of the Academy West Region,  paid thanks to his predecessor John Killeen FIAE who was the Academy’s first President when it was founded in 1997.

Ten Fellows attended the meeting in person and two connected via VC.

The agenda included:

  1. Welcome and introductions
  2. Update on IAE Work
    1. Report by Past President & Special Advisor Tom Leahy
    2. Report from Infrastructure Standing committee Tim Corcoran
    3. Report from Enterprise, Innovation & Education Standing committee Mark Gantly
  3. Programme of activities for 2024-25
  4. AOB
  5. Schedule of meetings for 2024-25

There was a very good discussion, which reflected the depth and detail of the work of the Academy and how Academy fellows live and deliver on the Academy mission of providing thought leadership in a time of great change. The next regional meeting is planned for later this year to coincide with a planned site visit.
