Professor O’Donoghue was Professor of Civil Engineering in the University of Galway 1997-2021 and was Dean of Engineering 2002-2010. He has been a member of the Academy since 2015. Padraic succeeds John Killeen FIAE as Academy Western Region Chair and John was the Academy’s first President when the Academy was founded in 1997. John will continue to be an active member of the Academy Western Region.
The Irish Academy of Engineering is an all- Island body and has three regions Northern, Southern and Western. Academy President Seamus McKeague said “I thank Padraic for taking on this leadership role. Our Academy is a volunteer led organisation dedicated to marshalling the insights of eminent Engineers to making a better future for all on this island”.
Padraic is putting together an active programme of events and activities for the Western Region starting with a visit to the University of Limerick (UL) planned for September 2024 by the Southern Region. This will be followed by an in- person event in the University of Galway. Academy Special Advisor and past President Tom Leahy plans to attend both these events and looks forward to actively supporting Padraic’s new role in the Academy.
